This site sat on heritage land next to a busy highway, on a steep slope, with jacaranda trees the council wanted kept. The rules said the roof had to stay red and pitched, in keeping with the area, everything else about the house is contemporary. Natural stone met the heritage requirement, and red corrugated steel let the roof crank up for light and a modern feel, while the sound and reverberation off the highway got folded into the design by working the highway wall itself into the house.

Two levels climb the slope. Rounded stairs curve around the retained jacarandas and slip between the two wings into the living room at the centre, with the kitchen a few steps up. The basement holds parking for six cars and a kids' games room that still catches light off the north-facing slope. A 25 metre lap pool sits above the three garages, opening straight off the main bedroom and the living area.
